Gallery N. von Bartha is delighted to announce the forthcoming exhibition “Echoes out of a shoebox” with works by the Swiss artist Beat Zoderer. The exhibition will showcase new works made by the artist during his summer residency at the gallery, as well as selected earlier work from ongoing series. The exhibition is the artist’s first solo show in London and is on view through to October 21st 2006.

Beat Zoderer predominantly uses everyday materials as a basis for his work. The pieces on view were made with materials such as hosepipes, cable binders and cotton threads. The artist sources his materials from general hardware stores. Rather than altering them, Zoderer makes use of these materials within what at first appears to be methodical structures based on repetition or mathematical systems. However this is a deception, as each piece allows for an arbitrary element

During the largely spontaneous process of creating works, Beat Zoderer is guided by an attempt to create order in chaos. To facilitate this he sometimes draws on the formal language of historic works of geometric abstraction. The complexity of each piece consciously allows for imperfections and mistakes. It is this self-contradicting and ambiguous quality of the works that gives them the playfulness that probably best characterizes the artist and his work

The two centrepieces of the London show are works made during the artist’s London residency earlier this year. One is a series of nine works on paper, the second a large-scale sculpture made of hosepipes. Working in London the artist reassessed some of his most important works from the past ten years. The nine works on paper, echoing the core themes of the most pivotal works, are a result of the artist’s review. The title of the show is the title of this unique and fundamental body of work.
The second work in the show is a large sphere made from a variety of different coloured hosepipes, each section connected to the next, making the work a continuous line, wound up into a bundle. The chaotic web of pipe has a clear beginning and an end, and is held together only by cable binders.  This simplest of geometric shapes reveals its inherent complexity.
Two recent large-scale works on paper and a new relief of metal bands contained in a display case, as well as a wall piece made of hosepipes, complete the installation.

Zoderer was born in 1955. He lives and works outside Zürich. He is the recipient of several grants and art prices, including the 1995 Manor art prize and the 1998 Max Bill / Georges Vantengerloo Foundation prize. Since 2000 he is a member of the committee of the Camile Graeser Foundation. Important solo exhibitions include shows at the Kunsthalle Basel, Helmhaus Zürich, Kunstmuseum Bonn and Wilhelm Hack Museum in Ludwigshafen.

Gallery N. von Bartha will exhibit additional works by Beat Zoderer at both the modern06 art fair in Munich (26 – 30 September 2006) and at the Art Cologne art fair from (1 – 5 November 2006).
