(* 1935 in Kansas City, Missouri) studied at the Nelson Art Institute in Kansas City, Missouri. At first glance his paintings seem to be grey monochrome picture planes. At a closer look, however, one realises that the grey of the painting changes. At first it is hardly noticeable but after a certain time one recognizes subtle gradations from light to dark grey. The gradation starts at the top of the painting and becomes darker at the bottom. The transitions between the different shades of grey are fluid. James Howell has been working for decades exclusively with the colour grey in his paintings and drawings and in doing so has revealed the infinite variety of possible shades of grey.
