(* 1971 in Dres­den, Ger­many) started an appren­tice­ship as a stone sculp­tor and carver in 1987. From 1993–98 he stud­ied sculp­ture at the Hochschule für Bildende Kün­ste (Acad­emy of Fine Arts) in Dres­den and was then accepted into the mas­ter class of Prof. Ursula Sax in Dres­den and at the Slade School of Fine Art in Lon­don. In Hempel’s kinetic works the empha­sis is on move­ment and on the visual and spa­tial impact pro­duced by light. Hempel lives and works in Dresden.
