(* 1971 in Dresden, Germany) started an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor and carver in 1987. From 1993–98 he studied sculpture at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) in Dresden and was then accepted into the master class of Prof. Ursula Sax in Dresden and at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. In Hempel’s kinetic works the emphasis is on movement and on the visual and spatial impact produced by light. Hempel lives and works in Dresden.
