A Presentation of works by Andi Fischer: Ship of Fools - umherirren

Andi Fischer (b. 1987, Nuremberg) lives and works in Berlin. A graduate of the Universität der Künste Berlin, the artist works primarily in oilstick and pencil. Fischer makes paintings, drawings and sculptures whose apparent childlike directness is grounded in a close reading of Western art history – animals, figures and fragments of the canon, energetically redrawn and in capital letters.

Albrecht Dürer has been a recurring reference throughout his practice, and Fischer has previously reworked Dürer's illustrations for Sebastian Brant's Das Narrenschiff (1494) in his own idiom. The book was printed in Basel, with woodcuts largely attributed to the young Dürer. For this presentation, Fischer returns to it a few streets from where it first appeared.

The presentation in the gallery's show storage brings together new paintings, drawings and a group of new wooden sculptures – the fools stepping out of the printed page and into the room. Fischer's encounter with Brant's "Narren" becomes direct, filtered through a vocabulary that is raw, irreverent, and more considered than it first appears.
