Caroline Achaintre at Art Basel's Unlimited

Art Basel, Unlimited Sector
von Bartha is pleased to present Gobbler by Caroline Achaintre, in collaboration with Art : Concept, at this year's Unlimited sector by Art Basel.
Caroline Achaintre’s work oscillates between object and subject, evoking a powerful presence that explores the concept of the uncanny. She draws inspiration from multiple references such as European carnival traditions, futurist and postmodern museum architecture, science fiction, prehistoric art, and animism (the belief that objects, places, and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence). “I process anything that triggers my imagination,” says Achaintre, “seeking the fantastical and superimposed.”
Caroline Achaintre (born 1969 in Toulouse) is known for her large-scale, hand-tufted textile pieces, ceramics, and works on paper. They reveal anthropomorphic forms and indicate a particular interest in animism. Writer Anaël Pigeat recently met Achaintre at the Young V&A in London to discuss her work and her fascination for masks and tapestry. You can read the full article here.
From June 17 to August 9, Achaintre, living and working in London, has a solo exhibition, Eye Level, at von Bartha in Basel.
