In our 50th anniversary year, we captured the people, places and stories that make our gallery

This is the 50th year that the von Bartha family has had a gallery in Basel. Founded in 1970 by Margareta and Miklos von Bartha, in 2008, the gallery passed to the next generation, with Stefan von Bartha joining a Director. It is an ever-evolving space, driven by a passion for art.

To celebrate a momentous year, we have created a short film that looks back at the last 50 years, while reflecting on the present – and future. This isn’t a history lesson, but a portrait of the team behind the von Bartha logo, the places they have created and the art they represent.

When we created the film, we set out to share an insight into everyday life at the gallery, introducing members of the family and our team, and visiting our second space in S-chanf, in the Swiss mountains. For Stefan, it was a chance to share memories of his early years in the family business – a time when he’d often skip school, because he preferred the excitement of unpacking newly arrived artworks.

The film took place as we hung our anniversary exhibition: The Backward Glance can be a Glimpse into the Future – an exciting process, which nevertheless sparked the usual questions around finding storage space, and how to effectively hide cables…
